My Beta is EATING his tail...

honeybean , Monday, 9th of August 2010 11:19:29 PM

Ok, l just moved back home from my dorm two days ago when l noticed this
honeybean
behavior. His tail has always been kind of short compared to the rest of

his fins.l thought maybe it was a part of his breeding. It kind of looked

like a female crowntail is tail, only a bit longer, whereas the rest of

him all looked like the crowntail male he is.However...Yesterday l was

playing with him using the little glass tank mate l got him (glass
figurine of a fish - Edwardo is is a dolphin - attached to a hollowed out
and filled with air piece of glass which keps the fish down in the water
without sinking, l 'Play' with my fish using it by taking hold of the bulb
and moving the fish in the water. He will chase it, sometimes I will make it
bump into his body to get him rilled up) and then when he got bored l
stopped and let him do his own thing. At first, it looked like he was
chasing his tail like a dog.His fins were all flared and his gills were
too, so l thought he was chasing his tail b/c he thought it was another
beta. However, he then took a bite out of his tail, followed what fell off
to the bottom and ate it.l winced and thought, ok, he knows that is gunna
hurt now, so he wo not do it again...He then does it again.
/>Still have not unpacked everything for him, and ned to get new
gravel.Right now he is got a glas vase (no sharp edges), some plastic
greenery (replacing as soon as l can find some fabric), and the glass tank
mate.I've arranged the greenery so that he wo not be pulled in by the
current of it and get his tail shredded like my last beta.

would not be too worried, except it is gotten worse. He is got a huge chunk
of his tail missing now.Is there any way l can discourage this
behavior?I've taken to thumping his tank when l notice him doing it, just
to stop that indecent, but it is not something that will work long
term. Also is there anything l can do to help regrow his tail, at least
back to what it was?

Melafix is a brilliant medicine which helps get the fins back
MI GORDITA
to normal and repair them, ask your local fish shop for it.
